Although steps have been taken to reform the prison system, there is still much racial and ethnic disparity present. The history of the prison system is riddled with the unequal and unjust treatment of people of color. Since the passing of the 13th Amendment, jails and prisons have become legal loopholes that have allowed for the development of modern-day slavery. From the Civil War to present day, the shadow of slavery can be seen through the prison system.
